On October 4th, over 15,000 people gathered at Gillette Stadium in pom-poms, tutus, neon wigs, face paint, and glow-in-the-dark gear for Electric Run, the most colorful and fun nighttime 5K run/walk you can imagine.

While the event leans much more towards a rave than a run, we were surprised at how family-friendly it was. Mothers pushed their babies in strollers with glow sticks around the wheels, seven-year-olds excitedly ran through the lit-up course, and the MC announced that even a ten-month-old child was participating in the run.

Volunteers did a great job of building up anticipation at the starting line, where they periodically showered the eager runners with handfuls of free glow sticks from an elevated platform. Fun electronic dance music pumped through superb sound systems, and every few minutes the MC would count down from 10, signaling the next wave of runners to get ready to burst through the rope.

The most unique aspect of Electric Run was experiencing all of the “worlds” they had set up around the stadium, which included Electro Rainforest, Neffmau5 Land, Rainbow Road, Delta Station, Pillar Party, Electric Avenue, and The Powerhouse. For most participants, stopping to take pictures of the dazzling visual spectacles was just as important as finishing the race.

The biggest payoff of the night was towards the end of the race, where we climbed up several ramps and were treated to the stunning view of the stadium. From up there, we were finally able to catch a glimpse of the huge laser lights dancing across the field in sync with the music and the thousands of runners laughing and dancing their way through the course.

The only downside to participating in an event like this, of course, is that now going for a run without purple trees, giant rainbow arches, fistfuls of glow sticks, and a dance party at the end seems totally boring. Guess we’ll just have to reminisce in the mean time and wait until next year.

Wish you could GLOW tonight? The Berklee Groove, Caf Shows, and SGA are throwing Berklee’s first-ever glow-in-the-dark dance party from 10pm to midnight in the cafeteria (150 Massachusetts Ave.) – free entry with your Berklee ID! RSVP here, and we’ll see you there!
